I'd avoid dual boxing with two combat characters. In my opinion, the beauty of alts is that you can cover twice the number of skills in the same time. OK. That's not entirely true, as there are a lot of support skills that are applicable to all ships, but, just as you can have a miner and a hauler, you could have a combat pilot and a logistics pilot.
If you end up with two combat pilots, you'll have two characters with roughly the same skills, but your first character will have the skills at a higher level than the second one. When your first one gets his skills perfected, you likely won't need the second character as a combat pilot anymore, so it'll kinda be a waste.
If you keep your main character focused on mission running and train your second character to fly Logistics (Basilisk or Scimitar), you'll be able to fit your main with a buffer, resists and a tonne of damage mods and your second character will act as the tank. This will let you run missions faster, as your main will be dealing more damage than before and you'll be able to focus on your main, rather than having to switch between client / computer one and two to target new enemies, start firing, reload, etc. (unless of course you use FOF's). You simply train the remote reps on your main, activate them and then glance at your second client when a new wave spawns to check he hasn't taken aggro.
It'll also mean you've got two characters with different skills, flying different ships, thus different specialities. And training up Logistics skills will take 3-4 months. After that, you could possibly work on your alt's leadership skills, to give your main a bonus to speed or tank or EW. Perhaps get the alt into a command ship, train him up to be a hauler or freighter alt, or maybe get him into a Hulk. Basically, use your alt as a support character, doing stuff your main cannot do.
Also, consider training your alt in a different race of ships than your main. It'll give you greater variety in the ships you can fly. Minmatar could be a nice idea as they've got the Scimitar (cap-stable shield logistics), as opposed to the Basilisk (remote cap-dependant shield logistics), and the Hurricane which is, undoubtedly, the best salvager in the game!
